Black History Speaker

Every February we come together to celebrate Black History Month. Each day there should be a celebration.

It should not take McDonald’s to tell us that Black History is 365.

I know that we have made tremendous contributions to mankind. The title of George Fraser’s book sums it up best “Success Runs In Our Race.”

In Hosea 4:6 it says “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”

If you knew where you came from would you want to stay where you are? A few years ago I did research to find out what all inventions people of color have contributed to society. Before I took on this assignment I lacked the knowledge of our history. Research the truth for yourself so you won’t lack history.

Once you read this article make a note of all the inventions of color that you touch on a daily basis. You can even have fun with it and see who in the family can come up with the most on their list? I will share a few of these incredible innovations with you that have stood the test of time. In the future you should be able to name at least three black inventions.

When you wake up and iron your clothes up in the morning you have to thank Sarah Boone for inventing the ironing board.

T. Elkins must have become tired of having to go out to the outhouse when he decided to put in a new toilet.

Before you go to sleep at night and put on the home security system you have to be thankful that Marie Brown wanted you to feel safe and secure.

When your grass gets high John A. Burr is the one responsible for giving us a lawnmower.

If you answer the door by turning the door knob or keep it open with the door stop be grateful that O. Dorsey inspired us with his gifts.

Tiger Woods best friend could be George F. Grant as he revolutionized the game of golf with the introduction of the golf tee.

Floors were sticky until T.W. Stewart created the mop.

Mail carriers have to pay tribute to P.B. Dowing for being able to put mail into a postal letter box.

Other great inventions that I will mention are the kitchen table, gas burner, lawn sprinkler, refrigerator, helicopter, roller coaster, curtain rod, folding chair, lock, peanut butter, lotion, soap, clothes dryer, fire extinguisher, pressure cooker, telephone system, and many more.

I felt it was important to teach those who don’t know and remind the ones that do about what we can do if we put our minds to it. People before us pressed their way through no matter what the circumstances were. Now it’s your turn to find others and teach these stories so they won’t lack history.
