The WORD: New Years Edition

Monday December 28th, 2009 Issue #95
The WORD is an informative news service brought to you by Derrick Hayes http://www.derrickhayes.com/ .The WORD gives you Wisdom, connects you with Others and Resources to Develop you.

What will you do differently in 2010 that you did not do in 2009? As my great friend Ty Howard tells me all the time, “2010 is going to be a product year for me.” Start brainstorming by yourself or with others and turn each poem, story, song, or idea that you have into product downloads. If you need to take payments sign up for http://www.paypal.com/ and if you need to sell downloads go to http://www.e-junkie.com/.

They won’t buy if you don’t try.

Ask The Experts:

Some of the topics you can comment on this week are:

1. Is an English degree really useful for anything other than a teaching career? What can I really do with it outside of a school setting?
http://www.collegerecruiter.com/ask-the-experts/general/what-can-i-do-with-an-english/index.php

2. Some people say to leave graphics off of my resume, but others say I should put them on to make it stand out. Does it really matter either way?

About WOE Enterprise

A few years ago my life hit rock bottom. I looked into the bible and I saw the word woe. I also wanted to see how the dictionary defined woe. Woe meant trials or tribulations. In life a woe to you might be a job loss and to another it might be a broken relationship.

One day I was thinking how I could reinvent my life so I wrote down the word woe on a piece of paper. As the document spoke to me it revealed that woe now meant WOE as in Word of Encouragement. From there I received this slogan.

“Before you leave work or go to sleep tonight, give someone a WOE, a Word Of Encouragement.”

Ask The Experts:

Some of the topics you can comment on this week are:
1. Are sample resumes really helpful? The ones I've seen don't seem to match what professional resume writers say "the perfect resume" should look like.
http://www.collegerecruiter.com/ask-the-experts/general/the-perfect-resume-1/index.php

2. I've been working as a systems analyst for most of my adult life because I've always been good with computers, but I find that I feel happiest and most fulfilled when I'm training interns and new hires. Should I consider changing careers or should I just enjoy those times when I get to conduct training classes?

Are you ready to win in 2010? In 2010 I want to accomplish these three things.

Embracing My Journey:

Ask The Experts:

Some of the topics you can comment on this week are:

4. I have a strong background in customer service and data entry, yet, when I uploaded my resume to an online job board, I started getting a ton of emails from recruiters with sales positions to fill. What's going on? Am I including information in my resume that I shouldn't or is this normal?
http://www.collegerecruiter.com/ask-the-experts/general/whats-wrong-with-my-resume/

5. I applied for an administraive assistant job through a temp agency's Web site, but when I went in to interview and test for THAT position, I was told that they don't have any jobs that meet my "skill set." When I mentioned the job I applied for online, they said, "Oh, you're not proficient enough in MS Word to qualify for that position." Why wasn't I told that in the first place when one of their recruiters called me to schedule an interview and testing? My MS Word proficiency is on my resume, so why didn't they already know I wasn't qualified? Is this just their way of getting people to come in and register with them so they can meet a daily quota or something? I feel like I was mislead.

Some of the topics you can comment on this week are:

1. Some of my new team members aren't Christians. What's the most respectful way to handle decorating the office?
http://www.collegerecruiter.com/ask-the-experts/general/holiday-decorating/index.php

2. One of my co-workers gives her all to her job every day. The way management repays her is by giving her even more work because they know she'll do it without complaining ... to them. She complains to everyone else and now she's so bitter she's taken to telling new employees not to work too hard because if they do, the only thanks they'll get is more work. What can I do to help make things better? Should I tell the new hires that she's just joking or should I tell her that if she's that unhappy maybe she should find a way to let the boss know?
