The WORD: New Years Edition

Monday December 28th, 2009 Issue #95
The WORD is an informative news service brought to you by Derrick Hayes http://www.derrickhayes.com/ .The WORD gives you Wisdom, connects you with Others and Resources to Develop you.

What will you do differently in 2010 that you did not do in 2009? As my great friend Ty Howard tells me all the time, “2010 is going to be a product year for me.” Start brainstorming by yourself or with others and turn each poem, story, song, or idea that you have into product downloads. If you need to take payments sign up for http://www.paypal.com/ and if you need to sell downloads go to http://www.e-junkie.com/.

They won’t buy if you don’t try.

Ask The Experts:

Some of the topics you can comment on this week are:

1. Is an English degree really useful for anything other than a teaching career? What can I really do with it outside of a school setting?
http://www.collegerecruiter.com/ask-the-experts/general/what-can-i-do-with-an-english/index.php

2. Some people say to leave graphics off of my resume, but others say I should put them on to make it stand out. Does it really matter either way?

About WOE Enterprise

A few years ago my life hit rock bottom. I looked into the bible and I saw the word woe. I also wanted to see how the dictionary defined woe. Woe meant trials or tribulations. In life a woe to you might be a job loss and to another it might be a broken relationship.

One day I was thinking how I could reinvent my life so I wrote down the word woe on a piece of paper. As the document spoke to me it revealed that woe now meant WOE as in Word of Encouragement. From there I received this slogan.

“Before you leave work or go to sleep tonight, give someone a WOE, a Word Of Encouragement.”

2. I've been working as a systems analyst for most of my adult life because I've always been good with computers, but I find that I feel happiest and most fulfilled when I'm training interns and new hires. Should I consider changing careers or should I just enjoy those times when I get to conduct training classes?

Embracing My Journey:

Ask The Experts:

Some of the topics you can comment on this week are:

4. I have a strong background in customer service and data entry, yet, when I uploaded my resume to an online job board, I started getting a ton of emails from recruiters with sales positions to fill. What's going on? Am I including information in my resume that I shouldn't or is this normal?
http://www.collegerecruiter.com/ask-the-experts/general/whats-wrong-with-my-resume/

5. I applied for an administraive assistant job through a temp agency's Web site, but when I went in to interview and test for THAT position, I was told that they don't have any jobs that meet my "skill set." When I mentioned the job I applied for online, they said, "Oh, you're not proficient enough in MS Word to qualify for that position." Why wasn't I told that in the first place when one of their recruiters called me to schedule an interview and testing? My MS Word proficiency is on my resume, so why didn't they already know I wasn't qualified? Is this just their way of getting people to come in and register with them so they can meet a daily quota or something? I feel like I was mislead.

She complains to everyone else and now she's so bitter she's taken to telling new employees not to work too hard because if they do, the only thanks they'll get is more work. What can I do to help make things better? Should I tell the new hires that she's just joking or should I tell her that if she's that unhappy maybe she should find a way to let the boss know?

Some of the topics you can comment on this week are:

1. My employees want me to remove the block I have on soical media sites, but I'm afraid that if I allow them to access Twitter, Facebook or any other sites like those, it will hurt productivity. Am I being a "stuffed shirt" or do I have a legitimate concern?

#15. Wipe The Competition

How To Go Guerrilla: The greatest tactic I have used is to become a TPE blog contributor. The results are that I now have confidence beyond measure. Building a relationship with TPE has led me to develop and present workshops based on what I have learned through social media. When you partner with a mega media star the competition will get out of your way whether you are standing up or sitting down with your last three sheets.

Ask The Experts:

Some of the topics you can comment on this week are:

1. One of our team members barely puts in any effort when our boss assigns us projects, but he reaps the same rewards because the boss evaluates us as a group instead of individually. One team member suggested creating a chart that could be used to record each person's contribution to the next project, then take it to our boss with any other data or summaries that we would normally turn in. Now, no one has ever actually confronted this guy about his lack of participation, but we've all complained about him behind his back. Slipping a chart to the boss seems underhanded and unfair when we've never even bothered to tell our slacking team mate how we feel. What should I do?
http://www.collegerecruiter.com/ask-the-experts/general/no-slackers-allowed/index.php

2. My friend has been trying to find a job since we graduated in May of this year, and she can't seem to understand how I was able to find a job within two weeks - I have great connections - and she hasn't been able to get past the first round interviews in almost six months of trying. I feel for her and want to tell her about a job that just came available where I work but, quite frankly, she's like Eeyore. I know this company prefers to hire people with more Tigger-like personalities. How can I make her see that she needs to be more positive? Would it help if I told her it could help her land the job that opened up where I work?

Speaker Net News:

In the Fall of 2008 I felt the effects of the recession with lost speaking engagements. With no budget to hire a publicist to help market my services, I researched and found cost-effective ways to market my business. I signed up for PR services like HARO, Pitch Rate and Blogger Link Up and learned how to market myself to the media to get article placement, radio interviews, quoted for blogs, and promoted in gift bags. I have taken what I have learned in the last 12 months and turned it into a workshop on social media.
